Families urged to consider adoption

Plaid Cymru Group supporting adoption

More people in Denbighshire are being urged to consider adopting so that every child can receive the love and stability they need in order to live a fulfilling life.

The Plaid Cymru Group on Denbighshire County Council made the call to coincide with the National Adoption Week.

Councillor Rhys Thomas has personal experience of adopting children and he raised the issue with Plaid Cymru’s Denbighshire group of councillors last week.

Cllr Thomas said: “At this time of forced austerity many families are finding themselves under greater pressure than ever before. This may well be why there has been a steep increase in the number of children who have to be taken into Local Authority care both here in Denbighshire and across the whole of Wales.

“Many of these children can never go back to their families and adoption is the only way to give them the love and stability that every child needs and deserves.

“Plaid Cymru supports the professionals who work in the fostering and adoption services in North Wales. The latest figures show that over 300 children are on the Wales adoption register and that over 60 children have been waiting for adoptive parents for more than 12 months.

“Your Denbighshire Plaid Cymru councillors urge you to consider whether you could offer a home to a child waiting for adoption.

“Adopting a child or children is not easy but there is professional support available for people who want to adopt.”

The North Wales Adoption Service said: “‘Some people are reluctant to enquire about adoption as they feel that they won’t be eligible, and rule themselves out because of hearsay or common myths. So we would encourage you to speak to us first. We are more than happy to discuss any worries or issues you may have.

Those thinking about or considering adoption should contact the North Wales Adoption Service and they will receive an information pack along with a response form, 0800 085 0774.

Those wishing to support National Adoption Week can do so my using the hashtag #SupportAdoption on Social Media.
